Brought to you by the letter P.

Upon first listen of The Passionistas, I was reminded of a band I used to love in the mid 90s... The Sugarplastic. It's not exactly the same, but it's that same style of quirky, fun indie-rock that you can't help but sing along to. I especially love the opening line of Y2K, "Why do we have to die 'cause someone missed a zero?" It's 2 minutes or less of absurd enjoyment per song, and how can you not love that?
From God's Boat:
Wild West
Y2K
The Socialists
And in case you haven't heard it before:
The Sugarplastic - Don't Sleep

The Pipettes are a band that I don't exactly love, but can't get out of my head. "Your Kisses.." has been on repeat in my head (and iPod) for the past week, but after listening to the rest of the album... I can't really back it 100%. It's cute, they're adorable, but it just doesn't feel consistently good. But I'm not denying that it's fun, and I'm not saying they're bad. It's just that some of the songs are a little too kitschy for my taste. I will, however, admit that these two tracks are great.

the passionistas is the best band name i've heard in awhile. y2k had some great nerdy lyrics. i agree with your opinion of The Pipettes. They remind me of The Donnas stuck in a fake version of the 1950s. Sometimes some catchiness but for the most part not much talent going on there.

I also like "We Are The Pipettes", which somehow isn't on the album and "Dirty Mind" :-) Plus, you have to admire the "Pull Shapes" video... I didn't even like that song until I saw it. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsvKJ65-TlM ]
I think they are genius but overall the album is indeed a bit of a mixed bag. Part of the genius of it is that I think you are supposed to think they aren't all that talented, in the tradition of the great Girl Groups some of whom were not talented in the least. Little Eva ("The Locomotion") was Carole King's maid for goodness sake!
I don't usually go along with something like this that everyone seems to be able to agree on, but I have been looking forward to this album for over a year and I love 'em. But I am also a BIG Girl Group fan...

hey, was this Putty from mog.com? if so it's a crazy small world. i know hayden bursk who knows lady byrd and i read this blog, oh oh and most importantly, i only like the one song by the pipettes, they sort of annoy me. just because something is retro doesn't make it appealing me, especially if it's just the band's style
