Hardcore Homos

My dear friend Manny brought over a CD yesterday that he purchased by a band called Black Fag. The name pretty much sums up what it is - a Black Flag tribute band with a homosexual touch. From the moment it started playing, I fell in (anal) love. Consisting of members Liberace Morris, Greg Streisand, Cher Dykeowski, and Robo Simmons... it's a genius idea I wish I had thought up. The covers are hilarious, and singer Liberace sounds like Fred Schneider (B-52s), while at other times he channels Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes).

In my discovery of this "hardcore homo" world, I also found Gayrilla Biscuits in the friend circle of Black Fag. They also do homocore covers of bands such as Minor Threat, Sick of it All, and of course Gorilla Biscuits. The quality of these tracks isn't as good as the ones above, but of course I could only get my hands on a couple of demo songs. Still hilarious to hear.

Do You Want A Piece Of Me?

Not only is Sweden's Kristoffer Ragnstam gorgeous, he also seems to be a very quirky and talented singer/songwriter. The sound is very comparable to that of a 70s David Bowie with a Beck'ish quality, but his vocals can differ in style from song to song. Pinning him in one spot is almost impossible. I missed his performances during CMJ, so I'm thinking about hitting up his show tomorrow night at the Knitting Factory.

Another thing I wanted to mention (because I found this to be very, very odd), while looking through his myspace photos I found this photo. You may be thinking "so what?" But the strange thing is that the collage of a city behind them is using a few things from my hometown - Jacksonville, FL. You'll notice the Jacksonville Landing, the Modis building, and the BellSouth tower behind them amongst other things. I just found it very odd that a Swedish "group" would be using Jacksonville landmarks.

The Slip are an up and coming indie rock band that have recently signed with Bar/None Records, a label who has carried some of my favorite artists of recent times (Architecture in Helsinki, Oppenheimer, Of Montreal, Yo La Tengo). The Slip are currently touring, and starting near the end of this month they will be supporting My Morning Jacket for a short while. I've heard their live show is not to miss, so I'm going to try to make the Nov. 30th show here in NYC. Check out their myspace link below to find a show near you.

Sorry again.

There have been no updates lately (although there are many good things I've gotten to review) because my laptop screen recently decided that stripes were the new black. I'm currently in the process of transferring everything over from my PC to my new Mac... and it's also CMJ week, so updates will go back into effect next week.

Stay tuned, y'all.
